Onions - July Already

04 July 2013

Into July already.

Has everyone got their ELK onions in the ground?

What are the early plant populations looking like at this point in time?

Interesting to see that the White Rot Growing Degree Day soil temps have been quite warm up until recently, is there any white rot infection showing up?

With the unseasonally warm weather of the weekend, onion planting is up to date. But how things change, with a large volume of rain falling overnite and more expected in the next few days further ground work will be quite a few weeks away.

Same up in Gisborne,  one grower has started planting, weather has stopped everything and it will be some time before it gets going again. Heavy rain expected and snow to low levels in the nexr few days.

A bit of a wet start to June saw things a little bit further behind than anticipated but some favourable conditions over the past month has seen all ELK and a fair few of the PLK's in the ground.  No sign of white rot (yet) but I suppose its just a matter of time.
The 1st application of Pristine is on some of the earlier blocks and we're watching those growing degree days closely as the 1st of the ELK's are next in line.

Am thinking that with this warm spell for this time of the year, the growing degree days will ramp up.

Surely we will get another cold wet spell..

      Welcome on the blog Pravin.

The weather must have helped hugely with good drilling conditions. Hoping the good conditions translate well to final stand numbers in field.

Is there going to a price to pay for the warm winter we have had in Pukekohe, warm rain ,warm ground temp, self set onions are perfect conditions for white rot

There appears some resistance building up against our traditional whiterot control. Would be great to see chemical companies get their heads together collectively and sort out a whiterot control strategy for the industry.

Thanks Bharat for your thoughts, of wihich is very pertinent.

The industry needs to work together in coming up with a sustainable approach to how we deal with OWR with the chemistries available.

With fungicides from the SDHI group coming on and in the pipeline, it is imperative that we use these responsibly and to ensure the chemistry has some longivity moving forward.

I have approached Onions NZ on the topic, of which am sure is being discussed, however it would be great to have more growers coming forward to the industry...
