Clinton Forage Brassica Competition Report

01 August 2013

Over $70,000 was raised for the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter and the Chair in Neurosurgery at the 2013 Clinton Lion's annual brassica competition. This event is now in its 2nd year and the support received from the local farming community reflects the importance of both the Rescue helicopter and the neurosurgery facility to the rural community. A number of those present have had the need to use at least one of those services if not both in the past and know only too well the vital link both services play.

Over 200 people attended the prize giving function held at the Clinton Community Centre in late June. Over 80 sponsors donated product which was auctioned on the night with spirited bidding making the auctioneers task relatively simple.

BASF territory manager Wade Paterson said that there were some outstanding results given the extremely difficult growing season farmers had to contend with this year with most of the area suffering from very dry conditions. Both the winning swede and kale crops had been sown using a pre-emergence spray programme which again proved the worth of this system.

The kale section was won by Warren Erickson of Waipahi with a total yield of 19.89 tonnes per ha. Warren used Treflan pre sow and applied Frontier-P immediately after sowing his crop. As a reward for having the winning crop that had Frontier-P applied Warren went home with a 5 litre of Frontier-P, donated by BASF who were once again involved as Gold Level sponsors of the event.

The winner of the swede section was Tim Williams who achieved a yield of 20.13 tonnes with a crop of Dominion and Aparima Gold swedes.

Fodder beet were also entered with the winning crop yielding in excess of 30 tonne  per hectare.
