"Wow" to this weather or "It's not good" ???

09 August 2013

Am staggered by the warm weather, not even half way through August as yet and blossom on the Nectarine!

Was in Mid & North Canterbury this week, arrived back to Auckland last night, it was really quite warm for the time of year...

Was out in Pukekohe today, again, couldn't get over how warm it was...

For me, it is a bit of a worry, especially that in my opinion we will indeed get another cold snap, of which will cause many issues.

Join the conversation, what are your thoughts on this unseasonal weather?

on the back of the mild winter, I'm hearing reports from the field that cereal crops are well ahead of previous years,  10-14 days in Canterbury - is this right?

This seems a lot, whats it looking like where you are, and what issues is this going to cause?

We have a Magnolia tree that flowers in early to mid September and this season we have 35% bloom on 17th August.  The plums in the street are well out and my apricot (Morepark) is 5% flowering.  Season is 3 weeks ahead for Christchurch.

Remember also that a plants growth can also be influenced by daylight length and intensity, so warm temperatures may fool some plants but not others.

If you have blossom on stonefruit time to spray for brown rot with  Pristine

In Canterbury today, soil temp was near 8 deg C, wow, was 4 deg C 2 weeks ago. Quite the jump...

Was in cereal crops looking at trials and can very much see weed strikes. Moisture and warm weather, weed strike...

Quite a bit of disease in cereal crops showing up also.

Been so good I put in the main crop spuds over the weekend - plenty of Cantabrians subscribe to the theory the veg garden goes in at labour weekend. Not the Tom's though as they could get Jack visiting.

    So yeah rather warm...
